Arabic I & II, Levantine Arabic I & II Language Classes

Late Spring Term

Alwan is pleased to announce a new series of Arabic language classes, starting the week of May 9, 2010.

The pace will be accelerated, covering a full term in five weeks. Classes meet twice per week, over five weeks.

Four different classes are being offered:

Arabic I: Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 11-June 17, 6:00-7:50 pm
Arabic II: Mondays and Wednesdays, May 10-June 15, 6:00-7:50 pm
Levantine Arabic I (colloquial): Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 11-June 17, 8:00-9:50 pm
Levantine Arabic II (colloquial): Mondays and Wednesdays, May 10-June 15, 8:00-9:50 pm

Formal registration and student evaluation for classes begin the first day of class.

NOTE: These are 10-session courses, rather than the 8-session courses offered last year.

Arabic Level I:

Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 11-June 17, 6:00-7:50 pm
First class: Tuesday, May 11
5 weeks (2 sessions per week)
Tuition: $420
Textbook: Brustad, K. et al Alif Baa Alif Baa with DVDS: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds (Second Edition), Georgetown University Press.
Instructor: Iman Maiki

This course will focus on learning the letters and sounds of Arabic and on the skills of reading, writing and pronunciation, in addition to listening and basic conversation.

Arabic Level II:

Mondays and Wednesdays, May 10-June 15, 6:00-7:50 pm
First class: Monday, May 10
5 weeks (2 sessions per week)
Tuition: $420
Textbook: Brustad, K. et al (Second Edition) Al-Kitaab with DVDS Part 1 Georgetown University Press.
Instructor: Iman Maiki

This course is a continuation of Arabic Level I and will cover vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary for better comprehension in Modern Standard Arabic. It will focus also on further developing skills in listening, reading and speaking. Colloquial Levantine Arabic also offered, with class registration starting Saturday, January 23.

Levantine Arabic I:

Instructor: Iman Maiki

This course will work on the student’s conversation and pronunciation skills in order to achieve confidence and fluency in day-to-day situations. The course will be conducted in the Levantine dialect spoken in Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. This course is for students who have completed Arabic I and have the ability to read and write. or have similar qualifications as determined by the instructor.

Levantine Arabic II
:

Mondays and Wednesdays, May 10-June 15, 8:00-9:50 pm
First class, Monday, May 10
5 weeks (2 sessions per week)
Tuition: $420
Instructor: Iman Maiki

This course continues the lessons learned in Levantine Arabic I, a colloquial Arabic class that improves student conversation and pronunciation skills, in order to achieve confidence and fluency in day-to-day situations. The course focuses on the dialect spoken in Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. This class is for students who have completed Levantine Arabic I, and have an ability to read and write, or have similar qualifications as determined by the instructor.

All classes will supplement textbook material with reading from Arabic newspapers and will introduce you to some Arab song and cinema.

Textbooks available at Dahesh Heritage Books, 1775 Broadway at 57th Street, or at some university bookstores.

About the Coordinator:

Iman Maiki, Alwan for the Arts Language Coordinator has taught in her native Palestine, England, and the US. In New York, Ms. Meiki has taught at Columbia University, New York University (NYU), New School University, Queens College and at Alwan for the Arts.

Please bring a check for the full tuition, made out to Alwan Foundation, to the first class meeting.

Please also note that if you drop the class after the first session, you will be reimbursed 75% of the fees. No reimbursements will be made after attending the second class.

Late Registration:

If you decide to register after the first class meeting you will be expected to bring a full tuition check to the 2nd session.
