Women's Dance Circle (CANCELED)

Oct 21, 2012-Dec 16, 2012

We regret that we must cancel this class at this time, but hope to be able to offer something similiar in future.

Sundays 12:00pm-1:30pm
October 21-December 16, 2012

8 sessions: On weekends with Ramzi’s class (Excluding the week of Nov. 22/Thanksgiving)

Learn to dance traditional social Egyptian or "sharqi" dance in a fun and relaxed women's only environment!

The Dance Circle will offer women an opportunity to learn new styles of "raqs" (dance) typically performed in different social contexts across the Middle East, such as weddings, birthdays, and other special occasions. Designed especially for beginners, course participants will develop their potential as dancers in a safe, invigorating and encouraging environment, while learning the foundations of what has become known as as “belly dancing” in the West.

Class Structure: Visiting Egyptian scholar, Asmaa ElTaher will help participants discover and share an alternative experience in traditional Middle Eastern dance while learning raqs sharqi techniques, muscle development and dance movement to the beat of fun and exuberant traditional “baladi” and popular "sha'abi" songs from Upper Egypt.

About the Instructor: An accomplished Egyptian television, film and theater actor, Asmaa Yehia ElTaher is an Egyptian Visiting Scholar at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center/CUNY Graduate Center. She is currently working on her Ph.D. thesis on African theater. Eltaher is an assistant lecturer in the Theater Department in the Faculty of Arts at Egypt’s Helwan University. She has two undergraduate degrees (in sociology and in drama and criticism), as well as an Master of Arts in drama and criticism.”
