Learning Arabic Through Cultural Immersion
The Arabic Language Studies Program at Alwan teaches Standard and Colloquial Arabic while exposing students to the linguistic and cultural dimensions of the language. From pop culture, food, and film to classical poetry, music, and short stories, these courses draw from the rich reservoir of Arabic language cultural products to reinforce Arabic grammar and vocabulary. By engaging with relevant cultural materials, students will encounter Arabic as a living language, mastering issues of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation within social contexts.

Classes are limited to a maximum of 6 students. At each level, a “text” (e.g., a poem, play, film, song) will be studied alongside the textbook or other materials supplied by the instructor to provide a depth of cultural engagement. Level II focuses on conversation and developing a functional vocabulary bank for practical communication skills.

This 8 week conversation course is designed to give students a chance to speak, practice, and learn the Levantine dialect in a fun and structured environment. Students will engage in a variety of poetry, television programs, and music while building conversation skills for daily life. Each week, students will focus on a set of related vocabulary and language structures based on the media material studied.

Materials: All materials will be supplied by the instructor.

Time Commitment: The class meets 2 hours/week for 8 weeks. Students are expected to spend a minimum of 2 hours/week in preparation for class.
Completion of Level I Arabic or low intermediate ability in the Arabic Language is required. However, no background in Egyptian dialects is necessary.
