Advanced Fiction Writing, A Workshop with Novelist Alaa Al Aswany in NYC

In this course, students gain a higher level of training in the craft of writing by mastering rhythm, tempo, tone, and brevity. They will explore the process of developing lively characters, mapping out a plot, describing realistic settings, adding subtext and layers of meaning, and penning captivating fiction. Students will mature as fiction writers, facilitating the next phase of their literary journey.

Wednesdays: 6:30–9:30 pm

Workshop runs from September 26 to December 12, 2018  (10 weeks).

Tuition $670 (Payment can be made by cheque at first class. Please make cheque payable to Alwan Foundation)

Classes are limited to ten students. Course is taught in English.

The prerequisite for this course is Fiction or Short Story Writing. Students may enroll without the prerequisite if they submit a writing sample indicating an advanced level of fiction writing.

About Alaa Al Aswany:

Alaa Al Aswany is the recipient of many distinguished international literary honors and awards. His novels are acclaimed in the field of contemporary literature, selling millions of copies in three dozen languages and adapted into film and theater performances. Al Aswany reached international literary acclaim with his groundbreaking 2002 novel The Yacoubian Building. His latest novel The Republic, As If, published in 2018, is set during the events of Egypt’s 2011 revolution. Al Aswany has taught and lectured at universities and cultural institutions around the world. A leading democracy advocate, his op-eds have appeared in such influential publications as The New York TimesLe Monde, the Financial Times, and The Guardian. Al Aswany pens a weekly column for Deutsche Welle’s Arabic news site and is fluent in Arabic, English, French, and Spanish.
