ON-LINE ALWAN ART AUCTION 2016

This year’s edition of artworks is not meant as a sale of objects or an appeal of wont. It is an artists' investments and contribution in preview and validation of Alwan' s affinities to the mission of aesthetics and the potential of artists to claim and expand their rightful ownership of an organization wherein they are its pivotal backbone. Featured are works from more than 20 world-renowned and emerging artists, who crisscross geographies and bifurcate the definition of identity. At Alwan time and again artists made it normative to collaborate, communicate, produce and innovate in no less than several languages or mother tongues to share an experience of meaning, indeed multiple meanings that transcend what the word denotes singularly. Rather what has been created, and in promise, is an expression of a shared vision playfully and infinitely signified. It is a strife for eloquence.

Contributing artists include:

Shirin Neshat. Mona Hatoum. Ganzeer. Nirmal Raja. Janane Al-Ani. Serge Hamad. Marwan Rechmaoui. Nancy Burson. Dahlia Elsayed. Amina Ahmed. Negin Sharifzadeh. Katayoun Vaziri. Samira Abbassy. Carla Salem. Ruby Chishti. Jaishri Abichandani. Tammam Azzam. Khaled Jarrar. Mehran Saber. Mahmoud Hamadani. Susan Firestone. Ramin Etemadi-Bozorg. Azin Valy. Shelly Bahl. Khaled Hourani. Lucien Samaha. Umber Majeed and more…

“The artists participating this year are not only from the Middle East, but also represent communities from outside the region who are invested in a.narrative of engagement with the rest of the world. While the market often nods to familiar Middle Eastern visual iconography, this collection speaks to more complex emotional and political realities,” says Negin Sharifzadeh, art curator at Alwan.

To leverage its mission, Alwan seeks to build a collection of artistic works and commissions productions as a commitment to the creative endeavor of its artists. This labor has sustained it through many days, and it is that history which serves as a reference for the future. Aggregating what artists, curators and cultural producers know best, the focus is and will be resolutely aesthetic and ownership is naturally to the artists. How culture rises and what it makes of the claims and attempts of laborers are not the entitlements of anyone. What however culture manipulates and privileges as its definition is its very own distinction and prestige.

This event offers an opportunity of visual representation that is relevant to the reality outside. Presence here in relationship to roots elsewhere and what is entailed in layered social and political dynamics. Most definitely we are part of the debate on the elusive nature of aesthetic judgment, poetically, as we struggle to represent ourselves. This is an invitation to participate in creative potential, in a word, the future.
