As part of Orientations: Tarab Edition II, Alwan for the Arts presents:

DISSENTING VOICES OF CAIRO: Aesthetic References for Collective Struggle

by Virginia Pisano, with musical guest George Ziadeh on vocals and oud

Free and open to the public

Doors Open at 6:30 pm

With over a decade of experience working on cultural projects from the Arab world, Virginia Pisano will discuss the repertoire of the vocalist Sheikh Imam and poet Ahmed Fouad Negm to illustrate how their legacy has inspired the dissenting voices of young artists in the repressive climate of present-day Egypt.

Virginia Pisano was born in Milan in 1983, and earned degrees in history from the Sorbonne and Middle Eastern Studies from the London School of Oriental and African Studies. She has worked for several cultural organisations as a coordinator of artistic projects focussing on the Arab world. Along with her research and cultural management activities, Virginia Piasno is currently exploring the path of radio documentaries production. She is based in the South of France.

George Ziadeh was born and raised in Palestine. In 1986 he moved to the United States, where he studied ‘oud with Simon Shaheen and classical singing and voice with Youssef Kassab, with whom he has toured extensively across the country. He has performed and lectured with many ensembles and institutions, and annually at the Columbia University Department of Ethnomusicology. From 1995 to 1997 George taught at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Ramallah and at Birzeit University.
