Moderated by novelist and former AAWW Open City Fellow, Tanwi Nandini Islam, novelist/poet Hala Alyan and poets Hayan Charara and Marwa Helal, explore the boundaries between the personal and political in this talk. From the Six-Day War and the invasion of Iraq to explosive poetic experimentations, these three Arab-American writers navigate what it means to have a private self, a family space and a home under conditions of war, displacement and migration.

About the writers:

Hala Alyan is an award-winning Palestinian poet, novelist and clinical psychologist whose work has appeared in numerous journals, including the Missouri Review, The Prairie Schooner and Colorado Review. Her debut novel, Salt Houses, explores a Palestinian family caught between the present and the past, between displacement and home. Read more about the author here.

His poetry collections includeThe Alchemist's Diary (2001), The Sadness of Others (2006) and Something Sinister (2016). His work often explores family, loss, identity and the experience of growing up Arab American in Detroit. Read more about the author here.
