Performing original compositions, the Quartet integrates Persian musical forms, modes, drone, rhythms and improvisation into contemporary jazz musical frameworks.

About the Artist

Tehran-born Sanam Tahmasebi started playing classical guitar at the age of 10. She studied with Lily Afshar and Mostafa Akhondi while pursuing classical guitar at Tehran Art University. In 2011, Sanam moved to Italy to study jazz music, including jazz vocals, under the tutelage of Diana Torto, Tiziana Gliglioni, Jay Clayton, Tino Tracanna, and Attilio Zanchi at the Giussepe Verdi Conservatory in Milan. Currently, she is pursuing a graduate degree in jazz vocals at the Prince Clause Conservatoire in the Netherlands under the guidance of Rembrandt Frerichs, Francien Van Tuinen, JD Walter, Joris Teepe, Paul Berner, Frank Wingold and Kurt Wiess.

Sanam is involved in a number of new projects, presenting improvised and experimental pieces that mix traditional Persian music with modern jazz. She has collaborated with Iranian electronic artist Kiavash Kia (ShirMan) and has recently embarked on an experimental project with Iranian pianist, Setareh Nafisi, composing original music.
