Based on the director's eponymous first novel, Earth and Ashes finds an elderly grandfather, Dastaguir, and his newly deaf five year old grandson, Yassin, on a journey to reach the coal mine where Dastaguir's son, Murad, works. Dastaguir must tell Murad that the rest of their family were all killed in a recent bomb attack on their village. The old man is beset on all sides by sorrow, that of his grandson, who cannot understand, that of his son, who does not yet know, and his own, made even crueler by the message he must deliver.

About the Filmmaker

Atiq Rahimi is a French Afghan writer and filmmaker. He fled to Pakistan following the Soviet invasion and later relocated to France in 1985 after receiving political asylum. On completion of his studies at the Sorbonne, Rahimi joined a Paris-based production company where he produced seven documentaries for French television. In the late 1990s, Rahimi embarked on his first writing project. His 2000 Dari/Persian book, Earth and Ashes, was an instant bestseller in Europe and South America. Rahimi divides his time between Kabul and Paris and continues to work closely with the Moby Group, the largest media group in Afghanistan, to develop programs and genres for its media outlets, as well as to support and train a new generation of Afghan filmmakers and directors.

3rd i New York’s monthly film/video/media salon is curated by local filmmakers and cultural producers to showcase the works of independent media artists of South Asian, Central Asian, and Arab descent. Providing alternative forums for these filmmakers who often have few venues to showcase their work and whose cultures and histories are often demonized or misrepresented in mainstream media, not only increases their visibility, but also provides a social forum for peers and audiences to participate in an ongoing discussion.

3rd i NY Film Programming is made possible in part with public funds from the Fund for Creative Communities, supported by New York State Council on the Arts, and the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, both in partnership with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

We thank Alwan for the Arts for hosting our film screenings and to the SINGH Foundation for acting as our fiscal sponsor.

Alwan for the Arts is supported, in part, by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, the New York State Council of the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
