Director Mohsen Melliti beautifully depicts how the generalized "war on terror" is manifested in an intimate, decade-long friendship. An Italian, Giuseppe (Italian for Joseph) and a Tunisian, Youssef (Arabic for Joseph) not only share the same name, but are the only men that work on and share ownership of a Mediterranean fishing boat, called Medea. A radio report of terrorism changes the atmosphere on the Medea. The fabricated creation and perpetuation of the "other" sadly comes to fruition as trust and friendship rapidly unravel. Mohsen Melliti subtly loads Io, l'altro with non-verbal communication, misunderstandings, paranoia and displays how the "war on terror" can destroy intimacy, trust, friendship, and life.
Io, l’altro won "Best First Film" at the Italian Golden Globes, "Best Film" at the Magnagrecia Film Festival, "Special Jury Prize" at the Italian Film Festival, and "Best Film Public’s Award" at the Brasilia International Festival.
Mohsen Melliti directed, produced and wrote Io, l'altro. Although Io, l'altro is his first feature film, he has made several documentaries prior to this feature debut. Additionally, he is the author of several books and many newspaper articles. Melliti was born in Tunis in 1967 and has lived in Italy since 1991.
