Using the arts as a model for social change, The Freedom Theatre is developing the only professional venue for theater and arts in the north of the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The aim of this project is to empower and give voice to the children of Jenin Refugee Camp through a unique program of workshops and activities in theater, supporting arts and multi-media, ranging in their emphasis from the largely therapeutic and healing, to the presentation of high-quality artistic products.
Filmmaker Mustafa Staiti (Jenin Freedom Theatre film coordinator), student actress Maryam Abu Khaled, and filmmaker Udi Aloni will be featured in a post screening discussion of four short films from the Freedom Theatre's cinema workshop in the Jenin refugee camp. The films provide an intimate glimpse of young peoples' lives in Palestine today. They will discuss the films and the cinema workshop efforts after the screenings.
Filmmaking at the Jenin Freedom Theatre
The main aim of this project is to provide youth in the community with the opportunity to develop new skills in all aspects of filmmaking, including photography, script writing, film directing, production and editing. Theoretical classes are combined with practical exercises and by coaching students to produce their own films, the project allows participants to tell their stories to the outside world.
As part of the filmmaking project, The Freedom Theatre is also organizing an intensive capacity building program for young aspiring filmmakers who, at the end of their course, will be able to produce high-quality films and at the same time share their expertise with the younger generation as trainers for the youth groups.
Youth and trainee films can be viewed online.
