Panel Discussion: Detained Without Cause: Muslims' Stories of Detention and Deportation in America after 9/11
Wed, June 22, 2011 7:00 pm at Alwan for the Arts
A co-presentation of Alwan for the Arts * Interfaith Center of New York * Muslim Progressive Traditionalist Alliance (MPTA) * National Lawyers Guild NY Chapter
The Post 9/11 emergence of Islamophobic media hysteria, oppressive law enforcement tactics and increasing surveillance in the name of security is a package sold to the public as the inevitable cost of freedom.
Please join us to learn what that cost really means in human terms: the stories of fellow New Yorkers disappeared from our communities during the first months after the terrible events of 9/11. “If we do not learn the lessons of the Past…”
Irum Shiekh, author of new Book “Detained without Cause” an oral history featuring the voices of deported truck drivers, students, newspaper vendors and building contractors, and of their families swept up in post 9/11 raids. Many of them were kept for many months in abusive isolation in Brooklyn’s MDC. Irum visited Palestine, Pakistan, India and elsewhere to follow these families after their post 9/11 deportation.
Martin Stolar, noted NYC attorney & former head of National Lawyers Guild NY; he worked with many post 9/11 detainees including some included in the book.
Sandra Nichols, NYC attorney with many post 9/11 immigrant clients.
TBA Additional Guests & Discussion, with Refreshments.
