Volunteers and Interns



The Alwan Program Assistant is an entry-level position with the primary role of supporting the Assistant Director (AD) and Curatorial Team (CT) in all aspects of programming related to the logistics, planning, promotion, and professional, efficient, and timely execution of Alwan’s events and cultural services. The PA will ensure Alwan’s facilities and inventory are maintained, equipped, and in a state of constant readiness for programming, and will coordinate and maintain the programming and services calendar. The PA will assist the AD in recruiting and overseeing volunteers and interns, and assist in other programmatic and organizational requirements, such as event reporting and documentation, and other administrative tasks, as appropriate.
This position will also particularly support the CT’s vigorous programming needs and demands with the assistance of curatorial interns, to ensure needs of guest artists and members of the community, and the logistics, planning, and execution of events are managed appropriately and met.


Education: Possession of an Associate or Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with coursework in any of the following: Fine Arts and/or Arts Administration, Middle Eastern Studies, Arabic, Music, Comparative Literature, Theater Studies, Film Studies. 

Required Experience: Minimum or equivalent of one-three years full-time professional or other experience in public or not-for-profit arts and culture programming and coordination, working with shared online platforms and calendars; and good working knowledge on the operation of AV and sound equipment (additional training on all responsibilities provided by Alwan) (additional experience may be substituted for education on year-to-year basis). Spoken Arabic is a must, reading and writing skills in Classical Arabic is a plus.

Preferred Experience: Knowledge in database software/management; project budgeting; advanced experience in AV and Sound systems; video-editing skills; basic business administration.


The Alwan Program Assistant (PA) is a results-oriented individual and an integral part of the Alwan staff team. This New York-based and full-time position reports to and supports the AD in operations and Alwan’s CT in programming, with the objective of advancing Alwan’s vision and mission through excellently executed programming and by consistently and professionally meeting programmatic needs and priorities. The PA is inspired by Alwan’s programmatic vision and institutional mission and is a high-performing team member, who works well in a fast-paced, dynamic, and flexible environment, successfully manages multiple projects and tasks, large and small, on or before deadline for a variety of programmatic tracks, is detail-oriented and has excellent oral and written communication skills.

Alwan for the Arts is seeking highly skilled Arabic Language Teachers to instruct levels I & II Arabic courses as part of its Education program: Learning Arabic Through Cultural Immersion. The Arabic Language Studies Program at Alwan teaches Standard and Colloquial Arabic while exposing students to the linguistic and cultural dimensions of the language. From pop culture, food, and film to classical poetry, music, and short stories, these courses draw from the rich reservoir of Arabic language cultural products to reinforce Arabic grammar and vocabulary. 

Classes are limited to a maximum of 6 students. At each level, a “text” (e.g., a poem, play, film, song) will be studied alongside the textbook or other materials supplied by the instructor to provide a depth of cultural engagement. A core curriculum for Levels I and II are available.

Time Commitment: Courses are usually held for 8 to 12 weeks, with at last one class for 2 hours every week, depending on semester and format. Teachers are expected to be prompt, committed, and proactive, and well-prepared prior to each class. Teachers are expected to meet with each student on a one-to-one basis each session, or as needed, with short evaluations conducted at the end of each course session.


Responsibilities and experience gained:

• Manage and independently implement the assigned instructional activities and course of study to engage students in conductive learning.
• Assist in the outreach and promotion of the upcoming course schedule.
• Provide support in the preparation of class materials.
• Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying learning styles and special needs.
• Monitor student progress towards achieving instructional objectives and goals.
• Communicate effectively with students and with Alwan staff on a regular basis.
• Conduct classes and courses professionally.

Required skills:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Keen attention to detail.
• Highly organized and have the ability to meet deadlines.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
• Relevant, accredited teaching experience.
• Ability to effectively interact with Alwan staff and students.
• Candidate must be highly qualified and dedicated to bringing their students to the highest quality instruction.
• Position is immediate and requires the above qualifications

Independent Contractor will be sub-contracted for specific classes and paid a percentage of net revenues from classes, workshops, private lessons, and other assigned duties.

According to the specific scope of work Independent Contractor will be paid the equivalent of 60% of net revenue for any and all classes, and/or private lessons subcontracted to the Independent Contractor.



Alwan accepts interns and volunteers year-round to support marketing, event management, fundraising, programming, and more.
